An American on
his first trip to England, desperately wanted to make a good
impression, be liked, and be well thought of.
So, on his first visit to a very exclusive club, he did his best
to strike up a conversation with one of the members. He introduced
himself and offered to buy the gentleman a drink.
"No, thank you," the gentleman demurred. "I tried
liquor once, and I didn't like it."
Undeterred, our American friend continued to try to become better
acquainted. After a long moment, he pulled out an expensive cigar
and offered another to the Englishman.
"Oh, no," he responded. "I tried smoking once,
and really didn't like it!"
After a while, observing the activities in the club and looking
for other options, the visitor asked his neighbor if he would
like to play cards.
"I played cards once and found it really wasn't my cup of
tea," said the Englishman. "However, my son will be
joining us soon, and perhaps he would play cards with you."
"Your only
son, I take it?" offered the American.
Try everything
once. Try everything you like again.
